The Local Organising Committee (LOC) and Hydraulic Structures Technical Committee (HSTC) of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) are pleased to invite and welcome interested researchers and practioners to the International Workshop on Hydraulic Structures: Data Validation. The workshop on the 7 to 9th May 2015 and a pre-workshop seminar on the 6th May 2015 will take place in the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Coimbra, in R. Luís Reis Santos, Pólo II Universidade de Coimbra, 3030-788 Coimbra, Portugal (40°11'09.8"N 8°24'55.1"W) in the 3th floor of the Department, at Laginha Serafim Auditorium and Hall.
This workshop is the 2nd International Workshop on Hydraulic Structures in a promise workshop series organized by the Hydraulic Structures Committee of IAHR
. The previous workshop was held in Aachen in 2013
. The 2015 edition will be held in Coimbra, Portugal in the campus II of the University of Coimbra, some days before the annual great Academic party of “Queima das Fitas”.
Hydraulic structures located in rivers, in coastal areas and even in sewer systems, condition the flow behaviour, affecting sediment transport, water quality, air entrainment and chemical aspects. Flow processes are inherently complex, offering challenges in their observation, understanding, and prediction. Their study in recent years has been supported by a development of monitoring equipment and instrumentation used in experimental facilities within different scales, and in prototype applications. There are also been significant progress in numerical model applications and tools to produce improved meshes and allow enhanced plots.
However there is no data base on the characterization of different hydraulic structures that could facilitate future uses and applications, simulations and predictions. This workshop aims to share data validation results around different types of hydraulic structures from experimental facilities, from prototypes and from numerical models, defining flow patterns, actions on structures and complex interactions. Different approaches to the conventional and innovative aspects of hydraulic structures design, operation, rehabilitation, and interaction with the environment are welcome, namely experimental, theoretical and numerical modelling.
